"Flags remaining in place in Bexley" - Request for Clarification and Consideration of Community Impact

Reported via mobile in the Vandalism category anonymously at 00:29, Tue 30 September 2025

Sent to London Borough of Bexley less than a minute later. Report ref: 8231082.

Dear Bexley Council,

I am writing to enquire whether the Council was responsible for putting up the St George's/Union flags currently displayed along the High Street. If so, could you please clarify the purpose and context behind this decision?

In particular, I am wondering whether the Council is aware of the close association of these displays with the "Raise the Colours" campaign, which has concerning origins and messaging (https://www.bbc.co.uk/ news/ articles/ c626vxyxgj6o). The movement has been criticised for being intimidating towards those of minoritised backgrounds and promoting a narrow and exclusionary vision of English British identity, and I am concerned about the implications of aligning public displays with such a cause - even inadvertently.

While it is, of course, entirely understandable to support national sports teams or celebrate local pride, it is also important to consider the wider social context. These flags, in the current climate, ARE making many residents feel uneasy. This discomfort may not always be voiced—especially by individuals from historically marginalised or minority backgrounds—because those most affected are often the least empowered to raise objections. By contrast, those championing the displays often can do so loudly, and with relative social confidence or support.

With this in mind, I would be grateful if you could share how the Council is monitoring any potential community tension arising from the displays. Are there mechanisms in place to gather feedback from a broad cross-section of residents, including those who may feel alienated by such overt nationalistic symbolism? What solutions has the council considered to help this who may feel intimidated by the displays, and at what point would these be enacted?

I appreciate the Council’s efforts to maintain a welcoming and inclusive public space for all residents, and I hope this feedback can be received in that spirit. I look forward to your response.

Kind regards, Rebecca M, Welling
