No lighting
Reported via Android in the Light in park or open space category by Roger North at 18:57, Sat 16 January 2021
Sent to London Borough of Bexley less than a minute later. Report ref: 2482397.
The 100 metre or so path from Station Road to the car park at Costa / Lidl etc is busy, but unlit. Casual drinkers are sometimes to be seen and rubbish is strewn everywhere. The path is uneven in places. I'm concerned about turning my ankle, stepping in dog sxxt or being mugged as there are a number of potential ambush points and no CCTV either. Grateful if someone could look into this. I'm happy to help further.

Email reply 18 January 2021 11:23 from Bexley Council. ''Further to your report I have visited site. With regard to the unlit footpath, the Council only have a duty to maintain existing light, with Council budgets being stretched there is no money to install new lighting. The Council policy is to recommend you take an alternative lit route which would be the Yarnton Way footway into the Lidl car park. I am sorry that I cannot be of more help in this matter." from Josephine Hollier, Deputy Highway Manager.
My comment: alternative route suggested adds an unrealistic 550 metres to the journey. I have passed this to my Councillors for review.

Developers of this area installed but one light, a bollard fitting at north end of path and it lights up the grass around it a treat, but provides no useful lighting of the footpath and surrounding area whatever. Said area is heavily rubbish strewn (see photos here and separate report). It's almost as if this has all been done deliberately to encourage people to drive instead of walking.....

Rubbish, since reported separately, has largely been cleared. But the continued lack of lighting attracts ne'er-do-wells who hang around at night and happily chuck their empty beer cans, food wrappers and empty cannabis bags away willy-nilly. And said people add a threatening presence to this area, which is screened from passing traffic - and Police cars - by bushes and undergrowth.

No change. The warmer weather has made this unlit area that is screened from passing police cars more attractive to threatening loiterers who don't want to be seen

LB Bexley provided an update 10/6/21. "Bellway have submitted a new application as they want to erect better lighting (than) what was approved. If.... this gets approved, (LBB will).... set a deadline to get this implemented."
